Sooraj Tom’s Cinematic Odyssey: Impact, Innovation and Inspiration

New Delhi [India], August 30: Born in the serene town of Kottayam, Sooraj Tom grew up surrounded by Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. From an early age, he was captivated by the world of visual storytelling, a passion that blossomed during his years at K.E. College Mannanam. It was here that Sooraj first delved into the limitless possibilities of the film industry.

Sooraj’s early career took shape in the advertising world, where he honed his craft in creating compelling narratives through commercials. His innovative approach and meticulous eye for detail quickly earned him recognition, leading to the establishment of his own production banner, Step 2 Films (Sooraj Tom Entertainment and Productions), in Ernakulam. This move solidified his reputation in the ad film industry, setting the stage for greater things to come.

In 2016, Sooraj made a bold transition to feature films with his debut, Pa.Va (Pappanekurichum Varkiyekurichum). This film, a delightful mix of humour and poignant drama, showcased his talent for weaving intricate stories that resonate with audiences, marking his entry into the Malayalam film industry.

Two years later, Sooraj directed his second feature film, Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal (EMA). This romantic drama explored the complexities of love and relationships, earning acclaim for its delicate storytelling and evocative cinematography. With EMA, Sooraj proved his versatility, seamlessly handling different genres with finesse.

In 2021, Sooraj ventured into the thriller genre with Krishnankutty Pani Thudangi. This suspenseful narrative kept audiences on the edge of their seats, further showcasing Sooraj’s mastery of diverse cinematic styles. The film’s tight pacing and gripping storyline solidified his status as a director to watch in Malayalam cinema.

Sooraj’s latest project, Vishesham, released in 2024, tackles the sensitive subject of fertility treatments with a touch of empathy and sweetness. The film has been lauded for its thoughtful portrayal of a topic often shrouded in silence, bringing to light the emotional journeys of those involved. Vishesham also garnered attention for its unconventional casting choice, featuring Anand Madhusoodanan—a music composer and writer—in his acting debut as the lead, breaking away from traditional hero archetypes. Once again, Sooraj’s storytelling brilliance shines through, capturing the human experience with compassion and depth.

Reflecting on his journey, Sooraj Tom once remarked, “Cinema is a powerful medium to tell stories that resonate with people. For me, each film is an opportunity to explore the nuances of human emotions and connect with the audience on a deeper level. My aim has always been to create films that not only entertain but also leave a lasting impact.”

Sooraj is thrilled with the overwhelming response to Vishesham, which has been wholeheartedly embraced by the Malayali audience. He is now considering adapting the film for other South Indian languages and Hindi. Following its successful theatrical run, Vishesham is set to premiere on Amazon Prime in September.

As Sooraj Tom continues to craft impactful films, his journey to the forefront of Malayalam cinema stands as an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers. His dedication to his craft, coupled with his ability to innovate and adapt, ensures that his contributions to Indian cinema will be celebrated for years to come.
