Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], December 10: The Karnataka Cabinet has approved plans to develop the University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) into a cutting-edge and exemplary institution, surpassing the standards of IITs and other premier educational establishments in the country. Tenders have been invited for the innovative design, which aims to transform UVCE into a unique national benchmark, announced Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar.
Speaking at the scholarship distribution event organised by the UVCE Foundation, a senior alumni association of UVCE, the Minister emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing the college, founded by engineering legend Sir M. Visvesvaraya. “Our government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, has allocated ₹500 crore for this initiative in the current budget, with ₹100 crore already disbursed this year. Realizing this vision requires state-of-the-art infrastructure, and my goal is to make this dream a reality,” he said.
The Minister revealed that 50 acres of land in the Jnanabharathi campus have been earmarked for UVCE’s expansion, and steps are underway to formally transfer the land. An Expression of Interest (EOI) tender for the IIT-grade campus design has attracted over 100 national and international participants. “With strong support from the CM, DCM, and cabinet members, administrative approval for tendering this project has been ensured. It is immensely gratifying to witness such collective enthusiasm,” Dr. Sudhakar added.
He also lauded the UVCE Foundation for its continued contributions to the college’s growth, including funding various developmental projects and providing scholarships for over 13 years. Addressing students, he encouraged them to utilize these scholarships effectively and give back to their alma mater once they succeed in their careers.
B.V. Jagadish, President of the UVCE Foundation , highlighted India’s journey towards a $10 trillion economy and the critical role of entrepreneurs in overcoming emerging challenges. He urged students to recognize the potential of AI and consider entrepreneurship in this transformative field.
This year, the UVCE Foundation awarded scholarships worth ₹45 lakh to 160 students. The event was graced by UVCE Board of Governors Chairman B. Muthuraman, UVCE Director Prof. Subhashis Tripathi, UVCE Foundation Scholarship Committee Chairperson Rama Vasantharam, Foundation President Madhava, Secretary Dr. Alice Abraham, and several students.
